Who is ready for some super fun fall poems??? Shared reading is one of my all-time favorite things to do with preschool and kindergarten kiddos! But, Pinterest really failed me this time around. I searched and searched, but I just couldn’t find very many fall poems that I liked. So… I decided to write some myself! (I say that like it’s a big deal, but writing something for an audience of tiny humans really isn’t that hard!) If you’ve had this same problem, I really hope these are helpful for you!
What is Shared Reading?
If you’re already familiar with using poetry in your classroom, just scroll on down to get to my new poems! But, if you’re thinking, “Shared reading??? Stephanie, what in the world is that???” then this section is for YOU!
Shared reading is an interactive reading experience during which the teacher uses a large text to demonstrate and engage her students in the behaviors that proficient readers exhibit.
Wait… What??? Stephanie, I have NO idea what you just said…
No worries! That’s the definition with all the textbook terms in it. Let me break it down into simpler terms:
Shared reading is when you use a big book, pocket chart, or poster to model fluent reading while you let your kiddos read along with you. They share in the reading even before they are readers themselves. But, since they’re doing it along with you, they are learning fluency and expression without even realizing it. They are learning concepts of print from watching you point to the words as you read along with them. They are learning phonological awareness skills like rhyming and syllables when you use poems as your shared reading texts. When you are intentional about how you use poetry in your classroom, you can check off dozens of objectives and standards each week in about 5-10 minutes a day.

But… even if you have NO idea what you’re doing, and you’ve NEVER used poetry or shared reading in your classroom before, I’ve got some fantastic news for you!!
All you have to do is START!! Choose a poem, put it in your pocket chart, and read it with your kiddos every day for a week. Even if that’s all you do with it, they will still pick up fluency, expression, and concepts of print!
Now that you’re ready to dive into shared reading with your kiddos, let’s get to the fun fall poems!
Five Little Acorns
I love any poem that’s about five little anythings!! So, of course, I had to write one about acorns! I love this one because in addition to all the literacy skills, you can integrate math skills too! Add some hand motions to it, and get ready to see a room full of engaged little ones!
Leaves Are Falling
This is another one that is SO much fun when you add some hand motions to it! The best part is jumping at the very end! Color words, sight words, rhyming words, and punctuation are all things you can highlight as you use this throughout the week!
Colorful Leaves
OK… I know this one isn’t a poem. But, it IS and a predictable chart, and I love these almost as much as I poems! Because the same words are used over and over, you’ll be amazed at the connections your kiddos will start to make when they get familiar with this one! They love reading the last line because the idea of a blue leaf is SO silly to them! And, here’s a hint: when you put this one in your pocket chart, write the color words in the corresponding colors. It will give your kiddos so much more independence and confidence when they’re reading it independently!
